China says 26 foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, are expected to attend the Victory Day military parade in Beijing next Wednesday.
Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei made the announcement on Thursday about events to commemorate China’s victory over Japan at the end of World War Two.
Hong said former Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio is also scheduled to attend.
China will stage a large-scale parade and other events on September 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of what it calls the “Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.”
Hong said China will work with people of other countries to firmly defend the achievements of World War Two and safeguard the international order.
China apparently wants to use the parade to project itself as a victor nation in the war.
Many of the attending leaders are from countries with close ties to China. Most Western nations have not sent leaders to the Victory Day parades.
North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency on Thursday confirmed that leader Kim Jong Un will attend the commemorative events. It said Kim will visit China soon at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
This would be Kim’s first visit to China since January 2019. It is rare for the North Korean leader to attend an event where other foreign leaders will gather.
Keio University Professor Isozaki Atsuhito noted that no major events were held last year when North Korea and China marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
But he said that a sign of improving relations was seen last week when a close aide to Kim attended an event at the Chinese embassy in Pyongyang.
Isozaki said that Kim apparently wants to rapidly restore the bilateral ties by visiting China. He said that it will effectively mark the first time for Kim to appear in a multilateral setting.
The professor also noted that with cooperative ties among Japan, the US and South Korea in mind, North Korea wants to show the world that it has friendly diplomatic relations with both China and Russia, and the three nations are allied to counter the United States.
Isozaki added that North Korea has no urgent need to ask the US to lift its economic sanctions as it has acquired foreign currency through exports of North Korean weapons to Russia.
He said that Pyongyang is waiting for a big concession from US President Donald Trump without making a proposal to scrap its nuclear weapons.
