SOURCE: Interview with Nik Gowing the night the Berlin Wall fell inside East Germany
Wild to think these were just everyday scenes right before history flipped the script.
You can change the title OP. I’ve seen them now. Thanks
I was in 7th grade. In the back of my yearbook there’s four pages dedicated to this day. I remember it being a huge deal but as a kid you don’t really understand the impact until you’re much older. Of course I lived during the Cold War and the thought of nuclear annihilation was always there but I didn’t understand the significance at the time.
Such a cool moment in history, reopening the border for everyone to cross.
My goodness look at how crisp the photos look
“The true luxury of the West is that no one pays attention to you. They call that freedom. Connections”
It’s strange to think the wall was that thin. In my mind it was always at least a meter thick.
Wow, that Berlin Wall story still gives me chills every time.
Wow, that moment of history hits different every time I see it.
When too many celebrated to a point of delusion, took their eye of ball and delivered Putin. History was **never** dead.
And now a club where you can eat cucumber ice stands where once was a highly dangerous zone
What’s Jake Peralta pointing at?
Communism is so bad
And yet, here we are in the process of building new walls again…. or worse….
those photos hit different knowing most people that day had no idea their lives were about to change forever just by walking though a checkpoint
Great photos. It’s kinda sad how film cameras got replaced by cheaper digital alternatives and overexposed iPhone pics.
I miss the days when no one had a phone on sight
And remember none of the animals that shot at civilians just wanting a better life where ever brought to justice
I believe the second photo is taken from the spot where the Holzapfel family ziplined over the wall.
Those are some cool-looking ZiLs in Pic 11. USSR flag on it, too!
Wow, that ad popping up in such a historic moment is peak 2024 irony.
How was the energy in Germany the days before and during? I ask cause I was too young to understand and I’m from the US. The pictures I’ve seen I’m sure don’t do it justice
And this is what Putin wants to reinstall and Ukraine is fighting him off on our behalf.
Whoa, that tunnel story hits different—history’s wild.
What makes these photos unseen?
Till a couple of years ago, we had the VW in the 4° photo. Same model and color.
