Dragonflies are right up there with Praying Mantises for me, apex insect predators that do it on sheer physicality not poison or stealth or anything like that. Just killers. Watching dragonflies work over top of ponds is something you really come to appreciate while fishing.

Pretty sure that they are the most successful hunters in the animal kingdom percentage wise.

These are pretty popular up here in Ontario during blackfly season. Folks swear by them.

Dragonflies for a day and bats at night. More safe than the Whitehouse.

  5. cyburrito より:

So do you buy them? Or just offer free real estate and wait for the dragonflies to show up?

I have a new respect for dragonflies and I need more in my area to eat these damn mosquitoes!

  7. doctor6 より:

Dragonflies have something like a kill rate of 95% whereas a house cat would have 30%

  8. dreamfearless より:

Dragonflies can fly in any direction in any orientation. Think about what it would take to make an aircraft capable of doing that.

  9. CottonShock より:

Is it possible to breed them at home to kill mosquitoes?? I’m infested and nothing is working against the little needles from Hell

Damn that guy’s neck is burned to shit

It’s crazy how evolution basically peaked with dragonflies nearly 300 million years ago. They’re so good at what they do that they’ve remained mostly unchanged for all that time.

He says he does nothing but you need to leave habitat intact, a clean pond for them to reproduce, and not drown your whole property in pesticides.

Just moved to a desert in southern Oregon, and there are the most dragonflies I’ve seen in my life, by a wide margin. It’s no exaggeration to say the air has been ‘thick with dragonflies’ for a week.

Here’s a “flame skimmer” I tried to photograph. At least, I think that’s what it is. Until recently I’ve just lumped all dragonflies together under one label:

Soooooo, is he setting aside uncut grass to improve dragonfly habitat? Are there particular grasses to use?

This gee whiz video is describing why “dragonflies are neat” rather than stating anything practical for fly control in farming.

  15. KingFirmin504 より:

Growing up in South Louisiana we didn’t call them dragonflies – to us they are called mosquito hawks

  16. I think farmers have been using animals and insects for pest control for a really long time. I just don’t remember which animals are for what.

I do believe cats where a classic tho, they hunt and kill rats and mice

  17. biodiversity? who would’ve thought?!

  18. davejjj より:

So is he saying that the only thing he did to encourage dragonflies was to stop cutting the grass?

  19. ingres_violin より:

Also, I just saw one this weekend holding an entire wasp. Couldn’t believe it, but googled it and turns out dragon flies indeed eat wasps too.

  20. I told my children about how cool dragonflies are, they haven’t shown up yet this summer. They’re usually here (SoCal) by now actually.

  21. darren559 より:

I loved these dragon flies in the Okefenokeeswamp. Their are these little biting flies everywhere down there that are a pain in the ass. The dragonflies will swoop down and grab these things right in front of you. Had a couple of the dragon flies land on my legs with these assholes in their mouths and the dragonflies devoured them in about 10 seconds. Ripped them to shreds and leave just left the wings.

  22. dolli310 より:

Dragonflies and bats are your friend

  23. He doesn’t do anything. He is counting on a natural population to show up. If released or cultured, then he’d be doing something.

  24. 1GIJosie より:

    Amazing

  25. bayinskiano より:

I didn’t know that these cool guys eat flies… or other dragonflies :'(

  26. You also need ponds. Dragonflies grow up in water.

  27. Between the lines, he’s advocating basically a “no-mow” approach, which is (of course) easier than actually mowing. This is a sort of thing that people have been moving back toward in the last 50 years or so, and it’s good that it’s catching on.

There is a lot to be said for “managing” your land for maximum productivity, but in this case, you can see that not doing that has secondary benefits as well.

  28. So… if i get a lot of some kind of thin rods and stick them all over my yard, will dragonflies come and eat the skeeters?

My father-in-law lives in the country and is constantly working outside in his retirement. He wears a pin on his hat that looks identical to a dragonfly, and he swears by it for keeping mosquitos away.
