PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A student has died after a classroom fight escalated into a stabbing at a Phoenix high school late Tuesday morning.
“We are heartbroken by this senseless tragedy today at Maryvale High School,” said PXU Superintendent Thea Andrade.
Police said the fight involved two boys inside one of the classrooms at the high school on 59th Avenue south of Indian School Road shortly before 11 a.m. Classmates said it involved freshmen and scissors were used.
Both were taken to the hospital, where one of them died. The other was not seriously hurt. No names have been released.

Police said after the fight, the staff told a school safety officer, who detained the suspect.
In 2020, Phoenix Union High School District got rid of SROs, but brought some back in 2023. School resource officers are full-time law enforcement officers assigned to schools, while school safety officers are usually retired or off-duty police who don’t work in that role permanently.
“If we have the capacity to have an SRO on campus and the ability to do that, yes. But at this moment, we don’t have the capacity of doing that nationwide and so we solved a problem with the SSO,” said Phoenix City Councilwoman Laura Pastor.
This year, the district also implemented an advanced weapons detection system in all schools. They had been in place at Maryvale High School as part of a year-long pilot program.
“We know that the first and best line of defense is a well-trained, highly alert staff and student body, and adult supervision is one of the best tools that you can have on campus,” said School Safety Expert Dr. Ken Trump, who is speaking at a School Safety and Security Summit in the Valley this week.
The school was placed on lockdown for hours before sending students home early. Parents told Arizona’s Family they were left in the dark.
Students said they didn’t know much about what was going on as the lockdown took place. “We found out in an announcement that there was a lockdown and it wasn’t a drill,” said Nathn Florez, a 15-year-old student. “When I found out, I was pretty shocked. I was at a loss for words.”
“This is a sad day for the great Maryvale community,” said Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano. “It’s a difficult time for those affected by this incident.”
Officials said Maryvale High School students will have virtual learning on Wednesday so “extensive emotional support” can be provided for students and staff. The school will update families on what the rest of the week looks like on Wednesday.
“To the parents out there, we are working to make schools as safe as possible,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
Phoenix police are asking anyone with information of what happened to call the department at 602-262-6151 or call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish speakers, where all tips can remain anonymous. Those with videos or photos can submit them to investigators using this link.
A phone policy is in place meant to limit distractions but families told Arizona’s Family they believe it could be putting kids in emergencies like this.
“The death of a student as the result of a stabbing at Maryvale High School is a terrible tragedy,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne said in a statement. “Schools must be safe places.”
Tips for parents on talking to kids about school violence
The investigation remains ongoing as police piece together what led up to the deadly incident.
“The on-campus school safety officer responded immediately, rendered aid to the student and did his job well,” Horne continued. “This terrible incident reinforces my commitment to doing everything possible to make schools safe.”
Phoenix City Councilwoman Betty Guardado released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:
“I am heartbroken and deeply disturbed by the violent incident that took place today at Maryvale High School. My thoughts are with the student who was injured, their family, and the entire school community as they process this traumatic event.
“Classrooms should be a safe place for all students. As a mother and a representative of our community, I want everyone to feel safe at school. Our community stands united in support, and I am committed to working with the school district, community and Phoenix Police to ensure their safety.”
