Why was Balto the first to get a movie?
Thank god he was named correctly. Imagine if the dog was named Toquit.
The diphtheria outbreak struck in 1925, threatening the lives of the more than 10,000 inhabitants of the area, especially children. The only viable medicine was in Anchorage, 1,000 miles away. Aircraft engines froze and the closest rail line was 674 miles away, so officials turned to sled dogs to move the serum.
Seppala’s team set out, 12-year-old Togo at the helm. They covered the most dangerous leg—a shortcut across Norton Sound-through the dark, in a blizzard. But in just 5½ days, the lifesaving serum was delivered to Nome. Togo and Seppala did an astounding 264 miles (421 km); other teams averaged 31.
Togo was very sick as a puppy and was given away to be a pet, deemed unsuitable to be a sled dog. He disagreed, jumping through a closed window to run back to his sled-dog siblings’ kennel. This greatly impressed venerated musher Leonhard Seppala.
Togo continued to be a troublemaker, though, and while he showed interest in being a sled dog, he still didn’t look the part at only 48 pounds.
But Togo changed Seppala’s mind. Before a big trip, Seppala put Togo in a kennel with instructions to not free him until the team was long gone. Togo broke out and trailed the team through nightfall, surprising Seppala the next day. On the way home, Seppala put him in a harness and Togo instantly settled down. Togo logged 75 miles (120km) on his first official day-unheard of for an inexperienced sled dog.
In 2011, Time named Togo the most heroic animal ever. In 2022, a Togo statue was unveiled in Maine, where he spent his last years. Disney released a film about Togo in 2019 with Willem Dafoe as Seppala and Togo played by Diesel, a direct descendant of Togo.
Seppala summarized the entire story perfectly: “I thought of the ice and the darkness and the terrible wind and the irony that men could build planes and ships. But when Nome needed life in little packages of serum, it took the dogs to bring it through.”
Good boy.
Movie called Togo is on Disney+! Great movie
This is Togo and his direct descendant Diesel, 14 generations. He played Togo in the movie with William Dafoe.

And most of the Huskies in the U.S. today are descended from Seppala’s team, including Togo. So next time you see a Husky, it’s very possible that the blood of heroes runs through that derpy fucker.
They have the same race every winter, with the celebratory start in Anchorage in February.
Some winters, Anchorage didn’t have snow and had to have multiple trucks of snow brought in for the starting line.
Instead of Iditarod, those snow-free years were jokingly called “Idirtarod.”
Once again, reddit reignites the 100-year-old Balto vs Togo beef, as is tradition
Togo did all the work. Balto got all the credit.
Disney made this into a movie.
Then they REMOVED THE MOVIE FROM SERVICE, because they felt they could get more value out of it as a tax write off.

We really don’t deserve dogs
Pay tribute to the loyal companions, sled dogs! If I were an Alaskan, I think I would have them!
Can anybody give instructions to avoid watching this movie on a platform that may or may not have it? 👀 *wink wink* *nudge nudge*
Man’s best friend .
We salute you Togo!!!
Check out this…er… impassioned rendition of Togo’s story.
Okay, but is it just me or is that sled driver Christopher Walken, specifically as Mr Feng from Balls of Fury?

Meanwhile Disney gave Balto all the credit. Togo deserves an apology and a movie of his own
Togo did all the work, Balto got all the attention.
Togoat
I’ve always loved this story. Balto was also a great dog but he got all of Togo’s credit.
And then when they made a movie about it, Steele, the villain kinda filled in Togo’s part…
I like that movie but it’s extremely off from reality. I liked Disney’s adaptation of Togo pretty well.
And yet modern society wants to ignore these genetic drives and get these dogs for their fluffy looks lol
My husband and I watched the movie about Togo with Willem Dafoe. O.M.G Such a sad and beautiful story! I cried so hard. Such a good doggy!
Against the odds did a season on their podcast about Togo and the relay. It’s an amazing story.
Sleg-dog
David Bowie is famous for so many things.
! Wow I learned so much in this thread..
Amazed TOGO was 12 and I had NO idea about what happened to all of the dogs after this.
I feel super sad that’s what happened to Balto/team.
Balto took fame, but TOGO did the hardest work and got the best end of life experience out of all of them .
Great post
We really don’t deserve dogs.

I would overnight it. UPS or FedEx.
I just got a dog and was looking for a name. tnx
These are the Real Dogs , Pug or Chihuahua’s Won’t be able to do that ✌🏻
What’s a Sleg-Dog?
Surprisingly still only 3 towns in the USA named Nome! Nome Alaska, Nome North Dakota and Nome Texas!
Not that I don’t love a good hero dog or anything. But almost everything I’m seeing doesn’t really mention the guy. I’m assuming they had to have an actual person with them. I’d be pretty pissed if I did a whole 250 mile journey just for my fucking dog to get a medal. (Although he would deserve one)
Balto may have had a difficult and heroic final leg of the journey, but if Togo hadn’t been such a badsss to get it there, it wouldn’t have mattered at all.
My family’s first dog was named Togo. He was a Husky and named after this dog. 🙂
My brother was convinced that the term “To Go” was named after this dog.
I mean he probably still is, we just haven’t talked about it in a while.
Trust in humanity has been restored. And dogs are simply amazing. 🥰
