My English teacher screamed “ahh there’s a cockroach” during this scene so students wouldn’t see anything on screen. It was effective. No one saw anything.
My 9th grade English teacher just sternly told us to “Grow up” when we giggled.
I’ve heard it told that Hussey was unable to attend the premier due to her age (I think she ws 16 at the time) and the fact the movie contained nudity. The nudity it contained was her Husseys own bare breasts.
The title is a lie. The suit didn’t say anything about “child pornography”. They claimed that they were victims of sexual abuse and harassment, which is a very different claim. Sexual abuse can occur even if there is no pornographic output.
I remember watching this in Freshman English half a lifetime ago. Thinking back, pretty weird that they show this to 15 year olds but better than watching it as an adult. Yikes..

We had to bring a permission slip home to be signed by our parents so we could watch it. We watched it all the way through, no skipping or “technical difficulties” and no comments from the class or teacher. Pretty uneventful, actually.
The guy who was the baby on the Nirvana cover, also did the same thing.

My english class watched this in high school, and my teacher attempted the least competent censorship ever for the nudity. It turns out that white copy paper does not particularly block projectors that are projecting onto a white screen.
Our school principal objected strongly to the idea that the film showed an unmarried couple in bed, but he made no mention of nudity. My English teacher had to explain to him that Romeo and Juliet were in fact married at that point.
We twelve and thirteen-year-old girls, wearing skimpy satin shorts, baby powder perfume, and bubble gum lip gloss certainly weren’t aware of any exploitation. 🫠
How did everyone, including me, watch this in 9th grade English? There’s like 43 Hamlets, a few solid Much Ado About Nothings, and one good Henry V.
I watched this in English class in high school. Wheeled it in on that big tv vcr stand. When the nude scene came up the teacher held up a piece of cardboard over the screen. Ahhh the 90’s
This is why we watched the Leo and Claire Danes Romeo+Juliet when I was in high-school. That movie slaps though and I love John Leguizamo as Tybalt. Also shout out to Pete Postlethwaith as the Apothecary
Didn’t she also defend the scene for pretty much all her adult life repeatedly? I thought the issue was the director was a dick, not the fact that she was topless, as was her costar?
Also, being topless is pornographic? That seems to be an extreme interpretation of what constitutes pornography.
It had just been re-released when we read it in 10th grade. So the whole class got to see it on the big screen. (This was a long time before VHS was available.) This was also when there weren’t a lot of bare breasts available for viewing by boys not old enough to go to R rated films.
It was probably literally five frames of her upper body.

My english teacher put this movie on and stood up to block the screen when Romeo stands up to look out the window after fucking Juliet so that way we wouldn’t see his ass, then totally forgot about the 15-year-old’s breasts that show up like ten seconds after that.
