  1. I went up to the top when i was a kid, and the feeling of it swaying in the wind stuck me with a lifelong fear of heights.

.. in HOPES that the legs wouldn’t meet? As in, they wanted the project to fail?

  3. HatlessDuck より:

The plan was to complete the arch at 2 am. Mayor said no, wanted a big presentation.

  4. “THE LEGS HAD TO BE HYDRAULICALLY JACKED APART”.

    Giggle

  5. TheLimeyCanuck より:

In case it’s not clear, that was the plan all along. The legs are intentionally under constant tension.

I was there watching them do the final assembly. Sun heating was also a factor. It was so cool to see this enormous shiny thing being built. Then going up in it in the little curved space travel style elevator pods. I had seen the World Of Tomorrow exhibit at the world’s fair the year before, and it gave the same feeling.

We don’t build enough stuff just because it’s cool anymore.

Billions of dollars get spent on stuff no one see’s or care’s about. Give us more arches, space needles, giant statues, carve a face into a mountain. I’d even take a pyramid at this point.

I want to know more about what was in the area before they cleared out 80 acres to make the park that’s around the arch. I can find some info, but not much:
    – it was 37 blocks of residences, commercial buildings, and warehouses
    – rather than buy everyone out, the city opted to condemn all the buildings
    – …then had to spend $10M in 1933 money settling lawsuits related to condemning all the buildings
    – 38 “firms and landowners” owned the land

I wish there were pictures that showed what was torn down. I find the juxtaposition of the life and people who used to inhabit a space vs what that space is now, fascinating. From neighborhoods with shops and homes, horse-drawn carriages trundling down the street, to the present-day wide open flat grass lawns crisscrossed with tourists and visitors on the footpaths, that becomes quiet and still every night when the park closes at 11.

As a Finn, I’m proud of Eero Saarinen’s achievement.

I live in St. Louis and have never heard this before, interesting

  11. fluffynuckels より:

Why not just build from the top down?

    Reminds me of my honeymoon

Last time I saw a post about the arch, somebody linked this documentary, and I thought it was really good. Enjoy.

  14. If they would have started in the middle they wouldn’t have run that risk. Idiots

  15. itsjfin より:

*So anyway, I hydraulically jacked her legs apart and cooled her arch with my firehose.*

  16. tsunami141 より:

Fun fact, in order to make sure that the structure’s legs would be aligned correctly, they actually started building at the top of the arch, and then they were able to build the legs and foundation when they touched down wherever it landed.

  17. Shoddy-Bug-3378 より:

I read somewhere that the architect Eero Saarinen died before it was even built, so he never got to see if his design would actually work. The whole thing was basically a massive engineering gamble – they had to calculate everything perfectly because once you start building two separate legs 630 feet tall, there’s no going back. The fact they had to use firehoses just to get the final piece in place shows how insanely precise the measurements had to be.

  18. ravi_on より:

The title is super confusing and the comments made the whole thing even more confusing. Where are the legs meeting and why are they being jacked apart?

  19. Oh look, the arch!

  20. sum_dude44 より:

$100 says we could not build this again right now

  21. I’ll bet all those meetskeptics feel dumb now

  22. Wait til you learn about the Big Dig, IIRC the Williams Tunnels was constructed in halves on either side of the harbor and when they went to fit them together they didn’t meet

  23. I live near there and I’ve been to the top few times. It is scary as fuck when it’s windy.

  24. newpua_bie より:

Why wouldn’t the builders just start from the middle and go out in both directions? Seems easier that way and no risk of the legs not meeting

  25. Sents-2-b より:

    I miss her !

  26. If you’re ever visiting the arch, the documentary that they show is really good and worth the watch. It will make you appreciate the unbelievable engineering work.

  27. Crazeford より:

I could totally make the river from there

  28. “See we have this project that we want to fail, it’s so dumb. I want to document all of it. How much is hating on a mfer worth to you, for you to invest in our documentary?”
