> The 2019–20 Australian bushfire season, also known as Black Summer, was one of the most intense and catastrophic fire seasons on record in Australia. Exceptionally dry conditions, a lack of soil moisture, and early fires in Central Queensland led to a premature start to the bushfire season from June 2019. Tens of thousands of fires burnt, mainly in the south-east of the country, until March 2020. The most severe fires hit from December 2019 to January 2020.
> The fires burnt more than 24 million hectares (59 million acres; 240,000 square kilometres; 93,000 square miles) destroyed over 3,000 buildings, and directly killed 33 people. Bushfire smoke was responsible for an additional 417 deaths. An estimated three billion terrestrial vertebrates, mostly reptiles, were killed or displaced. Some species may have been driven to extinction. In all affected states, air quality dropped to dangerous levels, and smoke moved across the Southern Ocean to impact weather conditions in other continents. Carbon emissions exceeded 700 million tonnes.
Yep. The original architect of the Opera House didn’t plan for it, but those white sails of the Sydney Opera House turned out to be the perfect projection surface for LED projections. That’s why it’s almost always lit up at night during the Vivid festival and NYE
The black summer bushfires are the main reason why I get major anxiety attacks over summer. I live near one of the areas that was devastated by them. So close we had fire ember alters and to watch the area for spot fires. Im not making this up when I say it was over a month + before I could see the blue sky again. These people are heros

Bro ofc they’re called “firies” I’m so unsurprised. Those firies are heroes
I had to zoom in on the far right one.
“Thank you FIRIES”, as in fire fighters.
To all the non-Aussies surprised/baffled that we call our fire-fighters “firies”, please know that we also call our paramedics “ambos” ❤️

That was 6 years ago???? Wow how time flies
Never forget those who helped you and led you to the steps of success.
Reminds me of this legend: [Australian firefighter’s message to PM Scott Morrison](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wpV3lHK90o)
I have bad eyesight and I’m looking at this on my phone, I thought it said fires.

“Tell the Prime Minister to go get fucked, from Nelligan. We really enjoy doing this shit”
Thank you, love fires!
?

>They have to put an “ie” on the end of everything. “Oh look there’s a bikie. He’s coming at me with a knifie. Now I’m in the mourgie.”
— Dylan Moran
its been 6 years !?
Looks as if a pyromaniac quickly added that “i” last minute.
When did they installed led screens on the Sydney Opera?
That is nice and totally earned. But I sure hope they’ve got monetary compensation as well
After a fire, nothing gets to me more than seeing a “Thank you Firies” sign.
They thanked them by giving them tickets right? Oh…
Never seen anything like this
Ah, late 2019. Australia burning, then weird virus from China, then….
I really thought this said “thank you fires” 🤣🤣
these are some very impressive projectors / holy cow the complex mapping of this shape is astonishing, makes it looks easy, which it’s not.
It’s been about 5 Years since Australia had that mega fire now huh.. that was rough
Love this!
Wow this amazing. My country(Turkey) fıre fighters dead. Nobody didn’t do it.
35% of Australia’s total forest area was burnt in those fires, according to Aussie Gov’t. those ‘firies’ are HEROES for how much they fought.
6 years!? Nah, that was 2 years ago tops, right at the start of the very recent pandemic!
