It was a once in a lifetime thing for me. Almost as bright as OP’s image, to the naked eye. I was going to drive out into the country away from the city hoping to see it, but as soon as I turned out of my driveway I was like “LOOK AT THAT DAMN HUGE COMET!”

Bopp was so astounded he thought it was 1895 and communicated as such.
I remember the Heaven’s Gate cult, led by Marshall Applegate, who convinced his followers an alien spacecraft was following the Hale-Bopp Comet that they would board and be transported to a new world. The cult ended in a mass suicide in 1997.

So was Hale’s report filed first and that’s why it’s the Hale-Bopp and not the Bopp-Hale comet? Like why didn’t they name it alphabetically..
And it was forever immortalized by Hanson as “Mmm Bop”

Hale-bopp was fuckin cool. Kids today missed out.
That same year is when Bart Simpson discovered a comet. Except it was heading directly towards Springfield.
And then a few years later the Heaven’s Gate people offed themselves because they thought it was a space ship.
Alan hale was a legend. Bopping Gilligan with his captains hat one decade, discovering comets another. Mad props
