一体なぜ、結果発表に1週間もかかるのでしょうか？
1. 郵送投票の集計
選挙当日に郵送された投票用紙は、1週間後に集計されるためです。すべての投票が反映されるまで待つ必要があるのです。
2. 3,000台以上の投票機からのデータ収集
なんと、3,000台以上の投票機から物理的にデータを集めなければならないのです！ 各投票機からデータ抽出用の「スティック」を取り出し、集計作業を行う必要があるため、時間がかかるのです。

“New York City said, ‘Our first choice is Eric Adams,’” Adams told a cheering crowd of supporters.
But under the city’s ranked-choice voting system, second, third, fourth and fifth choices matter, too. And when the full ranked-choice tabulation was run a week later, Adams was nearly edged out by Kathryn Garcia, who finished just 7,200 votes behind.

“You won’t know who becomes mayor — assuming nobody gets over 50% — until the following Tuesday, July 1, at 12 o’clock, when the RCV algorithm is run, and the world will see ultimately who ends up with over 50% of the vote,” Vincent Ignizio, deputy executive director of the city’s Board of Elections, said.
“Democracy takes time,” Susan Lerner, executive director of the good-government group Common Cause New York, said. Lerner says the extra week allows the ranked-choice tabulation to include all mail-in and absentee ballots, which must be postmarked by election day and received within a week.
“Because it takes time for the mail to get them into the hands of the board, they won’t be received and counted until later. So all we will know on election night is the first-place votes,” Lerner said.
Ignizio says there’s another reason for the delay: Unlike election night results, which are transmitted electronically from poll sites, the ranked-choice results rely on physical hardware.
“That algorithm is run through sticks that are actually in the machines,” he said. “So we have to get all those machines back from across the city, which is over 3,000 machines, bring them back to our warehouses, pull those sticks and run them with what’s called the cast-vote record.”
Election officials expect the process to run more smoothly this year than in 2021, when they mistakenly mixed in testing data when running the ranked-choice tabulation, delaying the process an extra day.
“We have absolutely learned our lessons from the past,” Ignizio said. “We have more checks and balances in place to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the process. So we’re ready to go.”
