If I recall, he also didn’t make any monuments/public baths/theatres with his name on them and the only place you can reliably find his name is on the mile stones along Roman roads since one of the few places he didn’t mind spending money was on infrastructure.
Great at the time, but Antoninus’ rule is well known for kicking the can down the road and ultimately leading to later conflict
Honestly for as much as the Romans were warring that is a pretty incredible accomplishment. I’m an ancient history nerd and even though he’s not my favorite Roman emperor I have to give Antoninus Pius more props for that. He’s definitely a top 10 if not top 5 Roman emperor.
He was also the 4th of the “Five Good Emporers.” He came right after Trajan and Hadrian. This is was probably the absolute height of Rome’s military dominance.
Likewise, as others have said, he maybe put off addressing conflicts until the next emporer had to spend a lot of time and effort addressing them.
That being said, 23 years of peace without majorly fucking up is a lot better than most emporers.
Man lived in the opposite of interesting times… I wonder what that’s like.

Is this where the word pius as we use it came from?
So, he was kind of a Roman Jimmy Carter?
(Crying in United States) that would be fucking lovely.
I’m 58 years old and the United States military has never been NOT active during my life time.
Fuck, I was even in a “war” while in the Army that just created another 30 years of heartache for all of us.
Dude was chill
Was he Pius because he was beloved of the gods or beloved by the gods because he was Pius?
Thanks Obama
Chillus Maximus
I thought this guy looked familiar. I took a picture of his likeness at the Stoa of Attalos – Museum of the Ancient Agora in Athens.

Dude was just chillin’
gotta keep that Janus gate closed
“It’s likely he likely”
This is how I’ll be referring to stuff I’m not 100% sure on
So it’s possible to run a country and not fight other countries? Woah…
It seems geographically impossible there wasn’t a Roman Legion of any kind within 500 miles of his location at *some* point during his reign. Wasn’t there a legion, y’know… guarding Rome most of the time? Maybe I’m wrong, which would be fascinating.
Roman equivalent to the 90s
Peacetime emperor
Most incompetent.
