I’ve seen ice cream trucks, I’ve seen taco trucks, but this is my first time seeing a knife-sharpening truck. This is in Toronto for anyone interested.
Twice a year, I call my local guy, who sadly has just a van instead of this cool truck, and he parks at the curb in front of my house and sharpens all my stuff. He does my knives, scissors, hatchet, axe. In between visits, I keep them touched up with a sharpener i have. It’s an awesome service and worth the money, IMO.
Cool concept. Most people just use stuff until it’s completely dull and then replace it. Would still recommend everyone learning to sharpen their own blades/tools.
Do not give these guys Japanese knives unless they advertise they are confident with them, the burr is a different angle to western steel and they’re easily ruined if they just assume to sharpen them the same
I lived in Ireland in the 80s. We had a guy come round on a bike. He’d flip the bike over and use the pedals to power a grinding stone, which he used to sharpen knives. He’d also trade his sharpening services for any old pots and pans you had laying around. We called him “The Tinker”.
We had services like this when I worked in restaurants. One type just trades your knives out every week with sharp ones and another sharpens them in the truck real quick.
There’s a dude at our local farmers market in a similar van who charges by the inch to sharpen your knives… I tried him out with my wife’s henckels assortment before trusting him with my Japanese knives & wasn’t impressed with the finish or durability of his work.
I ended up learning how to sharpen via a Ken Onion bench top belt style sharpener & will never go back.
I’m 68 and moved back to the house I grew up in. There was a similar truck for “Vets Sharpening” that would come by occasionally in the summer. Same type of service. Distinctive bell.
From what I understand the son took over the business and still comes around.
We’ve got a couple of these guys. There’s one particular one that’s good and a bunch of okay ones, so I try to track down the good one one I actually have a knife that needs sharpening
You need to use far more force with a dull blade, which increases the risk of accidents
Its easier to stich up a cut from a sharp knife than a dull knife, thats why i offer to sharpen my friends knives on my whetstone and strop, especially before they go and try to use a pull through sharpener, only asking to hang out in return
Can they fucking come here because we’re never going to sharpen our knives and it’s getting bad. I get excited when my father in law is coming to visit because it means we’ll be able to cut our food easily for a while.
Nothing weird about that. Just like this random guy who sells knives from a cart and talks to children he doesn’t know outside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.
As some one who sharpens their own knife I’d probably still pay for them to do it. Its a pain in the ass but easier than shipping it off to be sharpened
That’s a godsend. We used to have a knife sharpener in a nearby town but now you have to drive across the state to get knives sharpened. I got a Zwilling ice hardened chef’s knife and a santoku with an ice hardened honing steel that I save for when I need a super sharp knife, but my everyday kitchen knives take a beating. Would be nice to get a real good edge on all of them once in a while.
Growing up, there were no ice cream trucks where I lived, but there was a knife sharpening truck. He’d drive around the neighborhood with his ringing bell so that you’d know he was there and had an opportunity to go and get things you wanted sharpened. He’d do multiple passes to give people a chance. Seemed weird as a kid, but as an adult, it seems like a great service, especially for things like lawnmower blades. I heard from my parents the guy from when I was a kid had taken over the truck from his dad, and now his son runs it, and that makes me happy. I still recognize the bell when I hear it, but I also still wish we had ice cream trucks too.

This is like the only door to door salesperson id do business with

This is a long tradition! The Ohio Historical Society has a bike version of this from the 1900s!
Google “vintage travelling knife sharpener” to see a bunch

We had two driving around here in the 1980s. They both used ice cream bells, which always confused us kids in summer.
That’s probably an interesting person to have a conversation with.
Got nothing on [el afilador truck](https://youtu.be/Uf-KW7cYD_A?si=OCai64rbaVotbUTR) which will haunt your dreams

I love these; where I grew up the guy would ride on a motorbike with a trailer. Nowadays it’s so hard to find a place to sharpen knives.
See, then when someone shows up with an excessive number of knives needing sharpening, you’ve got your serial killer!
Finally a truck that pulls up and makes you sharper instead of broke.
When I was a kid a guy with a horse and cart used to do this round our way.

I know this guy! He drives around Toronto where I live. I’ve seen him on mine and my parents street a lot

This is on Long Island NY.
I live in NYC

It was always my favorite thing to do, chase after a slow moving truck with blades to be sharpened.
*Available every where but the uk
Honestly I need that lol, my chefs knife is getting dull
Reminds me, we have a couple different people here that drive around sharpening scissors and blades.
It also rings a bell in tune to alert people. I call it the Adult Ice Cream Truck.
Is this Toronto? It looks like the truck that sharpened my knives. Edit just looked and it is the same one! The older dude who runs it is a character.
Typical spanish tradition btw
That’s actually a good idea.
Dull knives are more dangerous than sharp knives.

In South Florida I seen these since the 90s it usually playing a very annoying tune, ice cream man style

Kids in the hall did it right
An actual trade that’s been long forgotten. 😳

Every hair stylist has one.

Looks like the one that comes around my neighbourhood. He sharpened my lawnmower blade a couple of times a but haven’t seen him for a few years.
Actually I would love to use this for my garden tools.
If anybody’s looking for work they can take a stab at this.
Does he sharpen other stuff? Chisels or saw blades?

Customer waiting
I am jealous.

That’s genius actually. I would pay this guy
I wish there was one of those around me.

I haven’t seen one of those in decades.
